5 HEALING BENEFITS OF THE HUMBLE HERB CHAMOMILE
Do you struggle to sleep well?
Do you suffer from tummy troubles, inflammation, or bone pain?
Do you feel stressed? Is anxiousness a steady companion?
These run-of-the-mill signs and symptoms may have a common therapeutic answer: Chamomile.
Chamomile has a long history of medicinal use that dates back thousands of years. Its healing properties were known by the ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman cultures. What was once old has become new as modern science catches up with this age-old wisdom.
This humble herb has been shown to have wide-ranging potential benefits. Here are our top 5!
Enhances sound sleep
Imagine falling asleep as your head hits the pillow. Imagine sleeping soundly and waking refreshed. Sounds like a pipe dream, right?
Chamomile could be your antidote to poor sleep.
A 2017 study published in the journal, Complementary Therapies in Medicine, compared a group of 60 people. Thirty took a Chamomile supplement, 30 took a sugar pill. After 28 consecutive days, the differences were significant. Those who took the supplement experienced “sleep quality [that] was significantly better than the control group.”
Relieves gastrointestinal problems
Do you suffer from bloating, gut spasms, an upset stomach, ulcers, or digestive irritation?
Known as the “star among medicinal species” for its multitude of reported healing benefits, Chamomile has long been prescribed by traditional healers to dispel wind, quiet the stomach, and calm intestinal distress.
In vitro, animal, and human research has shown that Chamomile extract can:
— ease colon spasm
— reduce rapid intestinal transit time and shorten episodes of diarrhea
— eliminate infantile colic
— inhibit the development of stomach ulcers
— provide anti-inflammatory benefits to the stomach and the first part of the small intestine, the duodenum
— exert effective microbial effects, particularly against Staphylococcus and Candida. This may help to positively change gut microbe metabolism
There’s little wonder, then, that Chamomile has long been prescribed for the treatment of stomach and intestinal ails!
Quells inflammation
Chronic inflammation is the cause of many health problems, including:
— allergies
— arthritis and joint diseases
— pain
— cardiovascular disease
— Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
— depression
— diabetes
— gut issues like constipation, diarrhea, and heartburn
— ongoing insomnia
— recurrent infections
— weight gain or loss
So, finding safe, effective ways to calm inflammation is key.
Wonderfully, Chamomile has been shown to exhibit antioxidant and antimicrobial activities, as well as potent anti-inflammatory properties. This may protect the body and brain against the harm caused by non-stop inflammatory processes.
Promotes relaxation and relieves anxiety
Imagine feeling more relaxed. Being able to let go of worries easily. The unraveling of your body and mind is therapeutic!
Chamomile is well-known for its calmative, relaxing effects. Its safety, accessibility, and affordability make it preferable to pharmaceutical drugs for many anxiety sufferers. But does it work?
The authors of a study published in The Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology investigated those with mild to moderate Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). Fifty-seven people took part: 28 were supplemented with chamomile extract, and 29 received placebo. The treatment extended over an eight-week period.
At its conclusion the authors found, “The results suggest that Chamomile may have modest anxiolytic activity in patients with mild to moderate GAD.”
Given generalized anxiety disorder affects 3.1% of the American population, this is welcome news. But, its effects are wider than GAD alone. Chamomile may also soothe anxiousness in those with chronic physical health conditions.
Slows or prevents osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is incredibly common and potentially disabling. An estimated 200 million people suffer from this bone breaking condition. One in three women over the age of 50 years, and one in five men, will experience an osteoporotic fracture at some point in their lives. That is, bones so weak they can’t bear the strain of normal life and snap.
Sadly, as the article, An overview and management of osteoporosis says, “Every fracture is a sign of another impending one.” So, prevention and early treatment are key. Yet, medications that are used in long-term treatment of osteoporosis can themselves cause bones to fracture.
But, Chamomile may offer an alternative method.
Research published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found that Chamomile, as well as several other plant extracts, stimulated osteoblastic activity. That is, activity of the bone building type. The authors concluded that this humble herb “may form the basis to design “functional foods” for the prevention of osteoporosis.”
